Born in Seoul, Korea, Duekwoo Kim began playing the violin at age nine and moved to the United States to continue his studies at the age of twelve. In 1999, he was awarded first prize at the ODACS state competition and the third prize at the Dorothy Franham Feuer Memorial Competition in Virginia. That same year Mr. Kim was accepted to the Juilliard School Pre-College Division under professor Mr. Hyo Kang and was invited to perform Mendelssohn Violin Concerto at the Oradell Performing Arts Center in New Jersey, returning a year later to perform Lalo Symphonie Espagnole.
Other performance highlights include recitals at Juilliard Paul and Morse halls and the Korean Embassy in Washington D.C.,appearances as part of the 2001 Winterfest Gala in New Jersey and his recital at “Experience Samsung” in Time Warner Center in New York City. In 2004, Mr. Kim was invited to play with the St. Paul Youth Orchestra in Virginia and was called back to perform for their Gala concert in the following year.
As a chamber musician, Mr. Duekwoo Kim played in many quartet and quintet concerts including chamber recitals in PJ-Sharp Theater and Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and the Chamber Music Festival at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. Mr. Kim attended Aspen Music Festival for four consecutive summers, where he performed as a soloist with the American Academy of Conducting Orchestra.
After graduating from The Juilliard School’s Master of Music program, Mr. Kim served as one of the co-principals of second violin position at the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra under music director maestro Myung Whun Chung. He has been appointed as Professor of Violin at Chung-Ang University and teaching Violin since 2021.
